They Cost HOW Much??

One of my friends had a BeautiControl "clinic" years and years ago. It was around 1990, when they were still doing colors for people. They would tell you if you were a "spring" or a "winter" and then sell you the whole line based on your season.

So I was at the "clinic" and the consultant has these fabric color swatches that she's draping over everybody. The hostess (my friend) had a different season on each shoulder and the consultant was lifting the swatches to her face. The hostess' beloved dog, an older Lab who had begun to have health problems, was lying on the floor by the fireplace. The dog began to heave and throw up.

The hostess jumped up, grabbed the swatches from her shoulders, threw one of them over where the dog actually threw up, and held the other under the dog's muzzle to catch what was coming out. The consultant FREAKED OUT and started screaming at the hostess. The hostess had had the dog since she was a teenager, it was her first "baby," and she of course FREAKED OUT in return.

It ended up with us (the hostess' friends) telling the consultant to calm down or leave. Sadly, she did not get the message until we started picking up her stuff, putting it into her cases, and moving them to the front porch while she ranted about how many thousands and thousands of dollars her swatches were worth. As we finally herded her out the door, she was still shouting over her shoulder that she wanted the gift back from the hostess that she had given as thanks for hosting the clinic.

The hostess did give it back a few days later, along with a check for $50 (the amount that BeautiControl had told her the swatches were worth), all wrapped up in the dirty swatches.

I'm sorry but I think the hostess sounds like an asshole on this one. She purposely ruined the consultant's products and then acted indignant about it.

Maybe the consultant shouldn't have freaked out, but the hostess should have apologized and paid her for the ruined products graciously, and not in the immature manner that she did.

Anonymous said...

I agree, the hostess was way out of line. If the dog has already puked on the floor, why even bother holding the swatch under the dogs muzzle?

Anonymous said...

It sounds like she was more concerned about her floor than the dog.

Anonymous said...

I doubt the hostess would have EVER grabbed her own work material or uniform for the dog to throw up on.

How horrible!

Anonymous said...

why couldnt the dog just have vomited on the floor? hostess was rude not to use something of her own no matter how old the dog was.

itsjustme said...

The consultant had every right to be upset.
The hostess was completely out of line by using the consultants items to take care of the puke.
I'm sure the consultant felt ganged up on too by the hostess and her friends.
And the way the hostess gave back the product and money is completely shameful.

Stopping by from SITS on your surprise FB day!

I totally agree with everyone above, that was very immature of the hostess, and even is she had reacted in hesitance and didn't realize what she was doing, she should have at least apologized with grace instead of handling it like a child.

kiwimeg said...

I dunno, sounds like the hostess probably just grabbed what was to hand. Fair enough in my book!

Having had pets with a tendancy to throwing up myself, I can completely relate - and I'm sure if she had had something of her own handy she would have used it. Vomit generally gets are fairly quick reaction in this house . . . doesn't allow much time for thought/deliberation!

I'm pretty sure if the Consultant had kept her cool she could have done pretty well out of the situation . . . nothing like a bit of guilt to get people buying ;)

My dog vomits now and then too but I would NEVER use someone else's stuff to try to catch it! That was pretty weird and I really don't blame the consultant for "freaking out." I would have too. I agree with Kiwimeg above, that if the consultant was a little more on the ball and could control her temper, she probably would have sold a lot!

I'm a "winter" by the way.

Congrats on your surprise SITS Day!

Congrats on your SITS day, thanks for sharing this horror story - I always wondered was season I was... Having been the owner of puking dogs and cats, I think the hostess just grabbed what she could grab quickly, and perhaps the consultant overreacted, but I have a feeling I would've been more apologetic after realizing what I used to wipe up the vomit with.

Pregosaur said...

I think they BOTH overreacted - the hostess certainly should have been more gracious about what she did, but the consultant could have reacted better as well.

What a horribly funny story. I admit, if my cat started throwing up, I would grab the first thing I could find, even if it was clothing. It's washable!

Young Wife said...

Happy SITS day! As a dog owner myself, I understand trying to catch it. Cleaning up dog vomit is no fun. But I don't think I would have grabbed the consultant's swatches. Then again, I don't see how they could be worth $50!

AmberRay said...

I think the hostess maybe wasn't thinking when she did that. but it seems that she was a bit more concerned with her carpet than the Consultants swatches or the dog. I can't believe people would throw her out making like she was the bad guy when it was the hostess dog that puked and the hostess that took something that didn't belong to her to clean up the mess. I think it was quite rude and perhaps the consultant overreacted but it would be a bit stressful that your expensive items were used to clean up dog puke. I agree with the person that said it speaks volumes about the hostess the way she sent the items back. It sounded like she didn't want to have the BeutiControl party in the first place.

Susie said...

Surprise SITs day!! I have never heard anything like this. I can see why the consultant was upset but she handled it really poorly! Being a former consultant myself, I have been in some not so fun siturations however, the hostess invites you into her own to sell your wares. I think everyone overreacted just a bit in this situation. No, the hostess shouldn't have used the swatches for puke patrol, but the consultant could have been a little more understanding.

karen said...

It sounds a little to me like both the hostess and the consultant lost it... the hostess never should have used the swatches to clean up after the dog (he's already thrown up, right? it can't sit for a sec while you get a kitchen towel?), and the consultant should have slowed her roll after the disaster happened. Unfortunate all the way around.

I think they are both in the wrong! While I can uderstand being concerned about your beloved dog...come on! I am sure there was something else that the hostess could have used! And while the consultant had every right to be upset over reacting about 2 pieces of fabric was a bit much! The hostess SHOULD pay for the replacement of the items she ruined and the consultant should have calmed down and discussed the situation like adults.

Isk8Jewel (~Julie~) said...

Stopping by from SITS... I agree with most above. While the consultant may have certainly over-reacted it was beyond impolite for the hostess to refuse to apologize which probably further aggravated the situation. Glad I wasn't at this party! Lol. Happy SITS day!

But I don't think the consultant was very gracious either. Bad situation all around. Glad I wasn't there to be subjected to that.

It's obvious the hostess was prepared to do the right thing since she found out how much the swatches cost and paid to replace them. Wow! What a strange story. I do think the hostess was in the wrong, despite how snippy and dramatic the consultant was. She was the HOSTESS, therefore they are guests in her house. If I were her guest and she grabbed my coat for her dog's vomit, I would probably smack her. This does not seem like it had anything to do with the dog (since when is catching vomit medically helpful?). She should have paid and moved on.

Wow! That is some story. I don't agree that the hostess was an asshole. I'm sure she reacted without thinking and if something else was handy she would have used it instead of the swatches. The consultant was "working" and should have kept her cool and remained professional. Sending the dirty swatches back was unnecessary, but makes for a better story.

Holly said...

Grandma Cat said...

Not being there, it seems that the hostess did not use the swatches in a malicious manner, but instinctively as the nearest thing at hand. The consultant, being a business person, should have acted professionally no matter what the situation. Instead of 'freaking out', she could have shown some compassion and sympathy for the poor dog, which might have prompted an immediate apology from the hostess as she realized what she had used.
